Experience the Magic of Fairy Fort Dingle on Slea Head Drive
Set along the stunning Slea Head Drive, Fairy Fort Dingle is one of the most unforgettable cultural and natural stops on the Dingle Peninsula. Just 10km west of Dingle town, in the serene parish of Kilvickadownig, this enchanting site offers a fascinating glimpse into Ireland’s ancient past — with a charming pet farm the whole family will love.
What Is Fairy Fort Dingle?
Fairy Fort Dingle is home to a remarkably well-preserved univallate ringfort — also known as a rath or lios. This ancient circular settlement sits on a gentle east-facing slope and offers breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding landscape. The site is enclosed by a traditional earthen bank and fosse, featuring remnants of 3 to 4 early dwellings and a souterrain (underground passage). The entrance, facing due east, is over 3 metres wide, and the fort’s imposing outer bank rises more than 4.2 metres above the surrounding ditch.
This remarkable structure transports you back in time, offering a tangible connection to Ireland’s rich and mysterious past. Whether you're a history buff or a curious visitor, this site belongs on your list when exploring the Dingle Peninsula.
The Legends Behind the Fort
Fairy forts like this have long captured the imagination of locals and visitors alike. Known in Irish as lios or ráth, these ringforts were built during the Bronze Age and remained in use up to around 1000 AD. While archaeologists recognise them as ancient farmsteads or defended homesteads, Irish folklore offers a more magical interpretation.
According to local legend, forts like Fairy Fort Dingle were imbued with druidic magic and protected by the ancient fairy folk — the Tuatha Dé Danann and Fír Bolg. Stories tell of misfortune falling upon those who disturb a fairy fort, especially if they cut down the sacred whitethorn bush or enter the site during the early hours of 1:00–5:00am. Many believe such actions could bring terrible consequences… or even death.
Step Into the Past and Meet Our Animals
What makes Fairy Fort Dingle especially special is the friendly, family-run pet farm located on site. As you soak in the mystical energy of the ancient ringfort, you can also meet some furry residents — including goats, lambs, sheep, donkeys, horses, and more.
The animals are used to visitors, and love a bit of attention. Guests can purchase animal feed on-site and enjoy the simple joy of hand-feeding these curious, gentle creatures. It’s a fantastic experience for children and adults alike — and perfect for a family day out.
Don’t forget your camera! These animals are not shy and are known to strike a pose now and again. A selfie with a sheep or a grin beside a goat is almost guaranteed to make your holiday album.
